About 21 minutes · Audio rendered · Next unit: Taking a number at Borgerservice

Listen

One file, both episodes: A, the conversation, from the start; B, the drills, from 9:49. Separately: episode A · episode B.

Chapters

The conversation

Pronunciation

The y sound

Listen to the next words. Some have the vowel in see. Others have that same vowel with your lips rounded, as in French tu. Listen, then copy it in the gap.

ti · tyve · ni · syv · toogtyve

The tens from fifty up

In the words for fifty, seventy and ninety, you do not hear the v, and the stress falls on the second half. Listen, then copy it in the gap.

halvtreds · tres · halvfjerds · firs · halvfems · seksoghalvtreds

One thing about the grammar

From twenty-one up, the single number comes first, joined by and, as in one-and-twenty, and phone numbers are read in pairs, like twenty-two, thirty-four.

Words in this unit

The drills (answer key)

Episode B. Cover this while you listen; check afterwards.

Substitution drill

Substitution. You hear the phone number, then a new last pair. Say the whole number with the new pair at the end.

Substitution drill

Same again with years. You hear the last part of a year. Say: I was born in nineteen, and that part.

Transformation drill

Transformation. You hear a number. Say the number that comes after it.

Transformation drill

Transformation. You hear a ten, then a single number. Join them into one number: the single number first, then the ten.

Response drill

Response. Mette asks you something. Answer as Jonas in the gap, then hear his answer.

About this course

FSI Danish by Hej Danmark follows the audio-lingual format of the US Foreign Service Institute's language courses: you hear a short conversation, repeat it line by line, work on one or two sounds, then drill until the answers come without thinking. It is not affiliated with the FSI. Each unit is two episodes: A, the conversation, and B, the drills. Do A, then B the next day, then B again. Always answer out loud, at full volume, in the gap.

The three voices are synthetic (text-to-speech): an English-speaking teacher and a female and a male Danish voice. The Danish text was written by Hej Danmark with AI assistance and is reviewed by a person before a unit is published; if you hear something a Dane would not say, write to us. The course is a pilot at about level A1 and makes no other claim about levels.
